The feeling of absence can be felt in many ways. British journalist and English language coach, Ian Lavis, experienced absence as an immigrant in Marseille, where he lived and worked for five years, but also on his return to Croydon in south London, where he now resides. These two places could not be more different in terms of setting, history and culture, but they share many similarities which he explores in his article: “Why Croydon is the new Marseille”.
